Max Fried Shines Again as Yankees Crush Rockies 13-1 Behind Explosive Fifth Inning

Max Fried delivered another dominant outing on Saturday, tossing 7 1/3 efficient innings as the New York Yankees blew past the struggling Colorado Rockies with a 13-1 win, thanks to a 10-run outburst in the fifth inning.

Fried (7-0) now shares the MLB lead in wins with Arizona’s Brandon Pfaadt. The Yankees’ southpaw scattered six hits and allowed just one run on 83 pitches. He’s now held opponents to two earned runs or fewer in all 11 of his starts this season.

With the game knotted at 1, the Yankees exploded in the fifth, sending 14 batters to the plate and racking up seven hits and three walks — including an intentional free pass to Aaron Judge. They also took advantage of a throwing error by Rockies starter Kyle Freeland and added two sacrifice flies.

Key hits came from Austin Wells and Trent Grisham, who each smacked two-run doubles. In a bizarre moment, Rockies second baseman Adael Amador tossed his glove into the air in a failed attempt to stop Paul Goldschmidt’s RBI single.

The inning ended with Judge striking out, but not before the Yankees had broken things wide open. Judge had already homered in the first — his 18th of the season, tying him with Philadelphia’s Kyle Schwarber for the MLB lead. New York finished the game with a season-high 21 hits.

Freeland (0-7) was tagged for eight runs — four earned — over 4 2/3 innings. He’s now gone winless in his last 14 starts. The Rockies, now 9-43, own the worst 52-game record since 1901. Despite a 3-2 win over New York on Friday, they’ll need a victory Sunday to claim their first series win of the season.

The Yankees’ 10-run fifth tied their biggest inning of the year, matching a similar eruption against the Padres on May 6. Historically, they are just 6-10 at Coors Field.

Sunday’s series finale will see Yankees righty Will Warren (3-2, 4.05 ERA) face off against Rockies right-hander Antonio Senzatela (1-8, 6.34 ERA).
