The Boston Red Sox aren’t actively seeking a third baseman this offseason, while the New York Yankees are—though they should be. Their current third baseman, Jazz Chisholm Jr., is a natural second baseman. In contrast, Rafael Devers, a three-time All-Star with 200 home runs by age 27, seems firmly entrenched at third base for the Red Sox, especially with his 10-year, $313.5 million contract.
Despite this, the Yankees are considered longshots to land Alex Bregman, a 30-year-old Gold Glove third baseman expected to command around $200 million. Baseball insiders, including Jack Curry of the Yankees’ YES Network, have pointed out that the Yankees are not heavily pursuing him.
Instead, the Yankees seem to be leaning toward using 36-year-old, injury-prone veteran D.J. LeMahieu at third base, even though LeMahieu has primarily played second base during his 14-year career.
On his Foul Territory podcast, veteran MLB writer Ken Rosenthal named the Red Sox as the “logical” destination for Bregman, calling it a natural fit. According to Rosenthal, the Yankees and Detroit Tigers—who were considered a likely landing spot due to Bregman’s previous connection with manager A.J. Hinch—are both unlikely options. He pointed out that the Red Sox need a right-handed bat and Bregman could fit in at second base or third, with Devers potentially moving to first base or DH.
Despite Rosenthal’s views, many experts still see the Red Sox as longshots. MLB insiders like Jon Heyman of the New York Post and Jon Morosi of MLB Network view Detroit and the Toronto Blue Jays as the favorites to sign Bregman. Robert Murray of Fansided also favors the Tigers and added that a move to Boston “isn’t the most likely scenario.” Heyman, however, still considers the Red Sox a possibility, although he believes their chances have diminished from earlier in the offseason.
