Buffalo Bills defensive end Von Miller returned to practice on Wednesday after Commissioner Roger Goodell lifted his four-game suspension for violating the NFL’s personal conduct policy. Miller expressed relief and optimism, saying, “I’m in a great spot. I’m just happy all of that stuff is behind me.”
This moment is significant for him, especially given the challenges he’s faced since joining the Bills, including injuries and the recent suspension that kept him off the field for two and a half years. With nine games left in the season, he feels a renewed appreciation for the game and the chance to play.
The suspension was linked to serious legal issues involving allegations of third-degree felony assault against his pregnant girlfriend. Miller turned himself in to authorities in Glenn Heights, Texas, following an arrest warrant and was briefly jailed before being released on bond. He has consistently denied the allegations, calling them “100% false.” The Dallas County District Attorney’s Office confirmed that no charges were filed, and the case is now closed, while the NFL also conducted its investigation.
As Miller looks ahead, he is focused on contributing to the Bills and did not mention considering an appeal of his suspension. He is eager to return to the field and support a team currently boasting a strong 6-2 record. He highlighted the importance of teamwork, particularly with quarterback Josh Allen performing at an MVP level, and is excited to resume his role in pass rushing and contribute to the team’s defensive strategies.
To help Miller transition back, the Bills granted him a temporary roster exemption, allowing him to work out at the facility during the later part of his suspension. Head coach Sean McDermott noted that this arrangement has been beneficial for both Miller’s mental and physical readiness, expressing confidence in his ability to reintegrate into the team after his extended absence.
Miller has been with the Bills since signing a six-year, $120 million contract in March 2022, playing in 27 regular-season games and two playoff games. After suffering a significant right ACL injury last Thanksgiving, he acknowledged that he likely shouldn’t have played this season.
This offseason, Miller restructured his contract, taking a pay cut that provided the Bills with significant cap space. As the team prepares for their upcoming game against the Miami Dolphins, McDermott emphasizes the importance of teamwork on defense and looks forward to having Miller back on the field to strengthen their lineup.
