The Boston Bruins are searching for solutions, but their end-of-season press conference this week didn’t offer many answers. After a disappointing season, the team is in need of changes, fresh talent, and a shakeup. Could one of the major changes involve trading Jeremy Swayman?
Bruins CEO Charlie Jacobs appeared to hint that GM Don Sweeney may not have much time left, with expectations high for a turnaround this offseason. “We’ve discussed this extensively,” Jacobs stated. “With the current healthy roster and the additions we plan to make this summer, I expect us to be a playoff team and playing meaningful hockey by this time in 2026.” If not, further changes could be on the horizon.
Sweeney took responsibility for the team’s underperformance, saying, “I have to accept the responsibility that this team significantly underperformed.” He reiterated Jacobs’ point, emphasizing that the Bruins will be active and that he will “use every mechanism possible” to improve the team.
What are the Bruins’ plans moving forward?
In an effort to improve their top-six wing situation, Fluto Shinzawa of The Athletic suggested that Sweeney could pursue players like Mitch Marner and Nikolaj Ehlers. With nearly $29 million in projected cap space, the Bruins have the room to target top players while also retaining their own. Sweeney aims to re-sign restricted free agent Morgan Geekie to a long-term deal. But could a trade involving Jeremy Swayman also be in the works?
Joe Haggerty of the Business Sports Journal, citing Elliotte Friedman, speculated that the Bruins might consider moving goaltender Jeremy Swayman. Haggerty noted that Swayman doesn’t have full no-trade protection, with his no-move clause kicking in only at the start of the 2026-27 season. On his 32 Thoughts podcast, Friedman discussed how Swayman’s performance fell short of expectations after his new contract, raising questions about whether the Bruins might consider trading him in a “now or never” situation with a player they are committed to for the next seven seasons.
