Zach Calzada Making Strong First Impression in Kentucky Spring Camp
Veteran quarterback Zach Calzada is already turning heads in his first spring with the Kentucky Wildcats. With over 2,200 career snaps, 32 starts, and a 23-9 record under center, Calzada brings more than just a powerful arm to Lexington — he brings leadership, maturity, and the kind of experience that could be a game-changer for Kentucky’s offense in 2025.
Offensive coordinator Bush Hamdan has been impressed with Calzada’s development so far, noting that every rep matters as the former Texas A&M, Auburn, and Incarnate Word signal-caller adjusts to a brand-new offensive system.
“Every practice is crucial for him,” Hamdan said Wednesday. “He’s played a lot of football, but learning a new scheme in a year-one setting always takes time. What’s been encouraging is how steadily he’s improved. For him, consistency will be key.”
Calzada, best known for orchestrating Texas A&M’s dramatic upset over Alabama in 2021, is no stranger to big moments. Now, he faces a fresh challenge — mastering Hamdan’s offense and competing for the Wildcats’ starting job.
So far, the early signs are promising. Hamdan emphasized that decision-making and accuracy are top priorities, and Calzada seems to be rising to the occasion.
His career stats back up his potential: 8,660 passing yards, 84 total touchdowns, and over 700 rushing yards (excluding sacks). That combination of arm talent and mobility gives him a dual-threat edge, especially valuable in the modern college game.
At Kentucky, Calzada finds himself in a competitive quarterback room, with redshirt freshman Cutter Boley — a local product who saw action in four games last season — also vying for the starting role. But Calzada’s poise and proven track record may give him the upper hand.
As spring practices roll on, the coaching staff and fans alike are closely watching to see if Calzada can take full command of the offense. If his progress continues, he has a real shot to become one of the most experienced and impactful quarterbacks Kentucky has had in recent memory.
