The New York Yankees are facing key injury concerns that could lead to significant changes before Opening Day at the end of this month. Third baseman DJ LeMahieu is dealing with a calf injury that could sideline him for a while, and designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton will start the season on the injured list due to elbow pain in both arms.
With these injuries, the Yankees are working on a backup plan to address these gaps before the season kicks off. In a Spring Training interview with the YES Network during Monday’s game against the Pittsburgh Pirates, manager Aaron Boone hinted at potential changes for the infield.
“I think Oswaldo Cabrera is definitely in the mix, especially against right-handed pitchers,” Boone said. “We’ll weigh our options and see if something develops from camp or if any late moves happen around baseball. But I like where both Cabrera and Oswald Peraza are at right now.”
For the designated hitter role, Boone mentioned Ben Rice and Dom Smith as potential options while Stanton is out. Jon Heyman of the New York Post also reported that the Yankees are considering signing veteran free agent J.D. Martinez to fill in for Stanton.

Third base has been a major concern for the Yankees all offseason. Currently, LeMahieu, Cabrera, and Peraza are their only viable options at the position. If they were to acquire an infielder, they could shift Jazz Chisholm Jr. to third base and place the new player at second.
The Yankees had been eyeing a third baseman even before LeMahieu’s injury, as his offensive and defensive performances last season were below par. With LeMahieu’s availability now in question, the team is expected to explore trade options again. They were rumored to be pursuing Nolan Arenado of the St. Louis Cardinals, a 10-time Gold Glove winner, but multiple reports have shot down the possibility of him joining the Yankees. As a result, the team will have to consider other third base solutions.
With Opening Day just three weeks away, the Yankees will need to act quickly if they want to make a crucial addition to a roster aiming to compete for the World Series in 2025.
