JUST-IN: Yankees Set to Shock MLB with Bold Trade for 33-Home-Run Third Baseman to Replace DJ LeMahieu!

Could the New York Yankees make a bold play for another high-risk, high-reward talent? That’s the speculation from former MLB executive and current analyst Jim Bowden, who suggested the Yankees might acquire Twins third baseman Royce Lewis in exchange for left-hander Henry LaLane, right-hander Cam Schlittler, and infielder Oswald Peraza.

This potential trade was outlined in Bowden’s recent predictions for the 2025 season in The Athletic. While the deal would certainly be a gamble for both teams, it would provide the Yankees with a much-needed right-handed bat at third base.

At 25, Lewis is undeniably one of the most electrifying young talents when healthy, but that’s where the problem lies—he struggles with injuries. Over the past three MLB seasons, he has showcased superstar potential, but knee and oblique issues have limited his time on the field.

Since his debut in 2022, he’s played only 140 games. However, when healthy, he offers a potent bat and middle-of-the-order upside. With DJ LeMahieu nearing the end of his career and Oswaldo Cabrera more suited as a utility player, Lewis could provide a long-term solution at third base for the Yankees, especially since he’s under team control until 2028—if they’re willing to take a chance on a player with an injury history.

In the trade, Peraza would be the centerpiece going to Minnesota. Once viewed as the future shortstop for the Yankees, Peraza is out of minor league options and has yet to prove he can consistently hit at the major league level.

Known for his glove, he could have a fresh start in Minnesota. On the pitching side, LaLane—an intriguing 6-foot-7 left-handed prospect—has shown promise in the lower minors, and the Yankees have taken a patient approach with his development. Meanwhile, Schlittler, a reliable strike-throwing right-hander, might have the potential to evolve into a back-end starter or long reliever.
