The New York Giants made a splash on Thursday night, pulling off a huge trade during the NFL Draft by moving back into the first round and selecting Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart—passing on Shedeur Sanders in the process.
To make the deal happen, the Giants traded the No. 34 and No. 99 picks in this year’s draft, along with a third-rounder in 2026, to the Houston Texans in exchange for the No. 25 pick. With this move, head coach Brian Daboll now has his potential future quarterback, who, on paper, shares a skill set similar to Buffalo Bills star Josh Allen.
Dart’s 2024 season with the Rebels was stellar. He completed 69.3% of his passes for 4,279 yards, 29 touchdowns, and just six interceptions. He also led the NCAA with a 180.7 QB rating and averaged 11.53 adjusted yards per attempt. Dart’s impressive stats included 15.5 yards per completion and 329.2 yards per game.
His performance helped him surpass legends like Eli and Archie Manning as the all-time leading passer in Ole Miss history, while keeping the Rebels in the College Football Playoff race throughout most of the season. But Dart wasn’t just a threat through the air—he was also a dynamic runner, carrying the ball 124 times for 495 yards and three touchdowns, showcasing incredible toughness for a quarterback.
While there are concerns about his decision-making and willingness to take big hits while running, Dart’s competitive nature and leadership potential could help define the Giants’ culture moving forward.
As for Sanders, experts like Mel Kiper Jr. have speculated that this could severely impact his draft stock, possibly causing him to fall out of the first round. If that happens, Sanders might find himself hoping for a team to trade up for him or for a franchise without an urgent QB need to take a gamble on him.
Meanwhile, the Giants had a standout draft night, not only securing their potential future quarterback but also grabbing Abdul Carter at No. 3 overall, landing a generational pass rusher in the process.
