JUST-NOW: Yankees Make Major Pitching Change After Consecutive Losses

Veteran reliever Ian Hamilton has returned to bolster the New York Yankees’ struggling pitching staff. The team activated the 29-year-old Hamilton off the 15-day injured list on Tuesday morning after he missed the start of the season due to a viral infection. Hamilton, who allowed four runs in 2.1 rehab innings at Triple-A, is expected to help address the team’s pitching woes.

In a familiar move, Adam Ottavino has been designated for assignment once again to make room for Hamilton. The Yankees DFA’d Ottavino last Friday, announced his release on Sunday, and then re-signed him that same evening. This suggests Ottavino will be back on the mound later this week.

Hamilton, who has become an important bullpen piece over the past two years, briefly started for the Yankees in 2023 before settling into a middle-reliever role. Over 95.2 innings in pinstripes, he has posted a 3.10 ERA, a 2.1 bWAR, and a 110-40 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

The Yankees have struggled with pitching recently, losing four of their last six games. As of Tuesday, the team ranks 10th in ERA (4.48, just above the league average of 4.08) and 5th in walks allowed (45, which is nine more than the league average). Monday’s loss marked their second losing streak of the season, a contrast to last year when they didn’t lose consecutive games until late April.
