With Opening Day fast approaching, the New York Yankees are already dealing with key injuries that could force them into some last-minute roster moves. DJ LeMahieu is nursing a calf injury that could sideline him for a while, and Giancarlo Stanton is set to begin the season on the injured list due to pain in both elbows.
Aaron Boone Hints at Possible Infield Addition
In light of these setbacks, the Yankees may need to make some moves before the season begins. During a YES Network interview at Monday’s spring training game against the Pirates, manager Aaron Boone hinted at the team’s approach to the infield situation.
“I think Oswaldo Cabrera is very much in the mix, especially against right-handed pitching,” Boone said. “We’ll evaluate how things shake out in camp and keep an eye on what happens around the league. Late moves do happen. I like where both Cabrera and Peraza are at right now.”
At designated hitter, Boone named Ben Rice and Dom Smith as potential fill-ins for Stanton, while Jon Heyman of the New York Post added that the Yankees are seriously considering signing veteran slugger J.D. Martinez.
Third Base Still a Major Concern
Even before LeMahieu’s injury, third base was a clear area of concern. His offensive numbers dropped significantly last season, and his defensive metrics took a hit as well. Now with his availability in question, the Yankees may revisit the trade market in search of an upgrade.
One name the Yankees were linked to heavily over the offseason was Nolan Arenado, the 10-time Gold Glover from the Cardinals. However, recent reports have ruled out the possibility of a Bronx move, meaning the Yankees will need to look elsewhere to plug the gap.
With Opening Day just a few weeks away, expect the front office to be aggressive as they look to finalize a roster capable of making a serious run at the World Series in 2025.
