JUSTIN: Giants Urged to Make a Shocking QB Trade After Derek Carr Decision — What’s Next?

The New York Giants’ quarterback situation is still in flux, and there could be a significant shakeup on the horizon, possibly involving a trade of a well-known veteran in response to Derek Carr’s recent retirement decision. Following Carr’s announcement, Pat Leonard from the New York Daily News suggested that trading Jameis Winston to the New Orleans Saints could make sense, as Winston’s role on the Giants roster now seems uncertain.

This came after NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reported on May 10 that Carr, 34, is retiring following shoulder surgery and a six-month recovery period. Ironically, Carr’s shoulder injury occurred against the Giants last season. His retirement opens the door for a veteran passer to join the Saints, but Winston, who joined the Giants in late March after spending four seasons with the Saints, could be a trade candidate. Despite the presence of Russell Wilson and highly touted rookie Jaxson Dart, Winston still offers value to the Giants.

Winston was brought in to add depth to a historically problematic quarterback position for the Giants. After a career revival with the Cleveland Browns, Winston led the team to victories over AFC North rivals, showcasing his ability as a deep passer. With Wilson, one of the league’s top deep throwers, already in the mix, Winston could provide valuable backup, especially given Wilson’s past struggles and the Giants’ patient approach to Dart’s development.

The Giants’ new QB plan has garnered mixed reactions. Some, including former No. 2 overall pick, have questioned the decision to trade back into the first round to draft Dart, considering Winston and Wilson were already on the roster. On the other hand, some believe the Giants have done enough to avoid needing a quarterback for at least another two years. With Winston, Wilson, and fan-favorite Tommy DeVito, Dart could spend his rookie season learning from the sidelines.

While a redshirt year for Dart seems likely, his impressive performances in rookie minicamp, like his connection with undrafted wide receiver Da’Quan Felton, could push the Giants to accelerate their plans. However, as the quarterback of the future, Dart’s development means Winston will still be needed to help stabilize the present.
