JUSTIN; Heartbreaker in Charlotte: Gamecocks Stumble at the Finish Line!

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (April 26, 2025) –

South Carolina Track & Field wrapped up the Charlotte Invitational on Saturday with strong performances, finishing second in both the men’s and women’s team standings in their first scored outdoor meet of the season. The women tallied 156 points, while the men finished with 127.5 points.

The Gamecock women competed in 11 events on Saturday, winning five titles. Sprinters Cynteria James and JaMeesia Ford led the way, with James taking the 100-meter dash in 11.31 (0.3) and Ford winning the 400 meters in a swift 51.09. Freshman hurdler Joslyn Hamilton also impressed, winning the 400m hurdles with a time of 59.34 and taking second in the 100m hurdles with a personal best 13.13—now ninth all-time at South Carolina and 11th in the East Region. Cheyla Scott added another victory by clearing 1.82m (5-11.5) in the high jump, tying for the third-best mark in program history.

The women capped the day with a win in the 4×400-meter relay, as Zaya Akins, Cynteria James, Jayla Jamison, and Hamilton posted a season-best time of 3:35.38.

On the men’s side, the Gamecocks claimed three wins on Saturday. Theo Mudzengerere captured the triple jump title with a season-best 16.07m (52-8.75), now third-best in the East Region.

The men also swept the relays, winning the 4×100-meter relay (Hughes Jr., Wrice, Crumpton, Greenhow) in 39.88 and the 4×400-meter relay (Wrice, Greenhow, Richardson Salazar, Crumpton) in 3:06.48, their third-fastest time of the season.

The Gamecocks will conclude their outdoor regular season at the East Coast Relays in Jacksonville, Fla., May 2-3, hosted by the University of North Florida. The same facility will also host the NCAA East Regional later in May.
