MAJOR-BOOST: Braves ’Set To Add More Bullpen Boost With Call Up Of Dominant Star Closer To The Majors

From 2010 to 2014, Craig Kimbrel was nothing short of dominant for the Atlanta Braves. During that span, he captured NL Rookie of the Year honors, earned four consecutive All-Star nods, and posted a staggering 1.52 ERA. He still holds the Braves’ franchise record for saves and currently sits fifth all-time in MLB history with 440.

Now 36 years old, Kimbrel is well past his peak, and recent seasons have been tough for the once-unhittable closer. Still, he’s back in the Braves organization, and judging by how he’s looked lately, a return to the big leagues could be on the horizon. With Atlanta’s bullpen struggling, Kimbrel might be just what the team needs.

The Braves had a quiet offseason, with minimal signings to address losses in both the rotation and bullpen. Charlie Morton and Max Fried left for the AL East, and trusted reliever AJ Minter signed with the division-rival Mets. GM Alex Anthopoulos indicated the team would mostly look inward to solve its problems—but bringing in outside help was inevitable. That help may come in the form of Kimbrel, who looks more than ready to contribute.

Currently pitching with Triple-A Gwinnett, Kimbrel has been lights-out, tossing his fifth straight hitless inning on Thursday. Though he’s unlikely to replace Raisel Iglesias as the team’s closer, he could give manager Brian Snitker another reliable arm in high-leverage spots. If his recent form holds, don’t be surprised if Kimbrel is back in a Braves uniform very soon.
