The Minnesota Vikings made impactful moves last season by adding Jonathan Greenard and Andrew Van Ginkel to boost their pass rush. This year, the team continued to strengthen their defensive line by selecting edge rusher Tyrion Ingram-Dawkins from Georgia in the fifth round of the NFL Draft on April 26.
Post-draft, Minnesota also made a move to sign Tyler Batty from BYU, who was considered by NFL.com to be the top undrafted free agent edge rusher. Batty stands at 6 feet 6 inches and weighs 271 pounds. At the NFL combine, he ran a 4.78-second 40-yard dash, jumped a 34-inch vertical, and completed 27 reps of 225 pounds on the bench press. While NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein had projected Batty as a sixth- or seventh-round pick, he did mention certain weaknesses in his game.
Zierlein’s scouting report noted that Batty plays with aggression and hustle, particularly at the point of attack. However, he lacks the length and quickness to consistently evade blocks, and could struggle against powerful tackles. Batty uses his strong hands to shed blockers but won’t overpower or outpace many professional linemen. Although he brings effort and experience as an older rookie, Zierlein questioned whether Batty possesses the physical tools or skills to make it as a top-tier prospect.
As the Vikings look toward the 2025 season, Batty will face competition from 2024 first-round pick Dallas Turner, Bo Richter, and Gabriel Murphy for a spot on the regular-season roster.
