The Minnesota Vikings have largely moved on from the idea of adding veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers to their roster this offseason—though there’s still a tiny window of possibility left. During a media session on March 26, general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah essentially closed the door on signing Rodgers, signaling that the team is shifting its focus toward second-year QB J.J. McCarthy as their starting quarterback.
While Adofo-Mensah didn’t completely rule out the possibility of Rodgers joining the Vikings down the road, perhaps if he remains unsigned and the situation changes, the message was clear: McCarthy is the future, barring any unexpected developments.
This shift raises an important question for Vikings fans: who will back up McCarthy during his quest to solidify the starting job? As it stands, Brett Rypien is the only other quarterback on the roster, but Minnesota is unlikely to go into the season with a QB room that consists of just McCarthy and Rypien.
Given that McCarthy has yet to take a regular-season snap, having only played limited preseason games, the Vikings will likely want a more experienced option to step in behind him, especially considering the potential challenges of his rookie year.
There are still several notable quarterbacks available in free agency, with former Super Bowl MVP Joe Flacco emerging as a front-runner for the backup spot.
