MAJOR-BREAKING; A New Era Begins: Dave Sims Makes Epic Debut as John Sterling’s Replacement – And Aaron Judge Delivers a Monster HR!

Despite the lingering injury concerns, there’s a positive buzz surrounding the New York Yankees as the new season kicks off. The excitement is always palpable with the start of a new year, but the heartwarming moment of JC Escarra making the Opening Day roster only added to the good vibes. Additionally, Austin Wells and Ben Rice are showing signs of making huge strides in 2025.

And look at that—Aaron Judge launched his first homer of the spring on Saturday! While he’s been a bit quiet lately, it was great to see one of his signature blasts. Although the Yankees suffered a gut-wrenching loss after leading 7-0 in the ninth inning and ultimately falling 8-7, fans still got a glimpse of what’s to come in 2025.

The game also marked the debut of new radio broadcaster Dave Sims. The former Mariners play-by-play announcer joined WFAN this offseason following John Sterling’s official retirement. Sims’ transition into the role had been rumored since last August, and now he’s teaming up with Suzyn Waldman for what will be a new era of Yankees radio broadcasts. His call of Judge’s homer was the perfect introduction:

“Let’s see if he whacks this one. 2-0. Here it comes. And he did! A drive deep to left, and it isss gone! A hey now for Aaron Judge!”

Sims, who spent 18 years with the Mariners, began his career as a sportswriter for the New York Daily News in 1980, eventually moving to radio in 1986 and later joining WFAN in 1989. While Sterling’s sudden retirement left a big hole in Yankees media, Sims’ return to his old stomping grounds in New York has softened the blow.

Not to mention, he’s a lifelong Yankees fan. This performance should serve as a preview of what’s to come when Sims officially takes over the airwaves for the Yankees’ Opening Day game against the Milwaukee Brewers on March 27.
