Former New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones is set to sign with the Minnesota Vikings, according to a source familiar with the situation who spoke to The Associated Press on Wednesday.
Jones will join the Vikings’ practice squad just days after the Giants released him, following his tenure as their former No. 6 overall draft pick. The details of the agreement have yet to be finalized, as the source, who requested anonymity, shared.
The Vikings are currently 9-2, with Sam Darnold stepping in to help lead the team. Jones will now join Minnesota’s quarterback group, which includes Nick Mullens and Brett Rypien. The Vikings’ quarterback depth was further tested when rookie first-round pick J.J. McCarthy underwent season-ending knee surgery in August, followed by a second knee procedure earlier this month.
Jones’ tenure with the Giants saw mixed results, finishing with a 24-44-1 record as a starter. His most successful season came in 2022 when he led New York to a 9-7-1 record and a win over the Vikings in the first round of the playoffs. However, his performance this season was less impressive, as he completed just 63% of his passes, throwing eight touchdowns and seven interceptions.
Now in Minnesota, Jones will have the opportunity to continue his career, potentially in a backup or developmental role, as the Vikings look to bolster their quarterback depth for the remainder of the season.
