The New York Yankees are aiming to make a World Series return in 2025. After falling short in the most recent Fall Classic, the team plans to strengthen its roster at various positions to boost its chances of winning next year.
Reports suggest that the front office will move on from first baseman Anthony Rizzo and second baseman Gleyber Torres, while continuing negotiations for a long-term deal with superstar outfielder Juan Soto. The team is also considering adding a top starting pitcher.
However, if the Yankees want another deep playoff run, they may need to prioritize strengthening their bullpen. ESPN’s David Schoenfield highlighted the team’s need for late-game support and suggested the Yankees pursue Milwaukee Brewers closer Devin Williams in a trade.
Schoenfield noted that with both Clay Holmes and Tommy Kahnle hitting free agency, the Yankees need to bolster their bullpen, especially with uncertainties around Luke Weaver’s ability to replicate his strong 2024 performance.
If Weaver delivers again, he and Williams could form a powerful 1-2 punch. Schoenfield also pointed out that the Brewers might prefer trading Williams to an American League team, and the Yankees have starting pitching depth in their farm system that could be attractive to Milwaukee.
Williams, who began 2024 on the injured list with a stress fracture in his back, returned to log 14 saves and 38 strikeouts in 21.2 innings. Over his six-year career with the Brewers, he’s earned two All-Star selections and two Reliever of the Year Awards.
Heading into his final year of arbitration, the Brewers may look to trade him before he becomes a free agent. As Schoenfield suggested, the Yankees could offer some of their top pitching prospects, such as right-hander Will Warren, who made five MLB starts in 2024, to sweeten a deal for Williams.
If the Yankees view a high-quality bullpen addition as crucial for a championship run in 2025, a trade for Williams could be their best path forward.
