The New York Yankees’ upcoming offseason is shaping up to be one of the most critical in the team’s history. A successful offseason would position them to compete with the Los Angeles Dodgers and other elite teams in the league. However, a lackluster offseason could see the Yankees fall behind, especially after the Dodgers strengthened their roster by signing ace Blake Snell this week.
To close the gap on the Dodgers, FanSided’s Jacob Mountz suggests the Yankees target some of Los Angeles’ free agents. Specifically, Mountz recommends pursuing Dodgers World Series hero Walker Buehler. Spotrac estimates that Buehler could sign a one-year deal worth $3.8 million.
While Buehler may not be one of the marquee names on the market, Mountz believes he could still be the top arm available. Yankees general manager Brian Cashman has reportedly taken notice of this and has shown interest in adding Buehler to the rotation. “Having witnessed Buehler’s postseason success firsthand, it’s easy to see why the Yankees want him,” Mountz writes. “Buehler could turn out to be the unexpected gem of the offseason.”
While Buehler is projected to sign for around $4 million, it’s unlikely his deal will be that low. A more reasonable expectation might be a two-year, $20 million contract. If the Yankees can secure him for less than $10 million per year, it would be a smart move. New York could also explore trading some of their current starting pitchers to make room for Buehler, although the team has yet to express a strong desire to move many of its starters.
