MAJOR-BREAKING: New Opportunity As Ex-Yankees Veteran Set to Surprise as Cubs’ Opening Day Starter—Here’s Why He Could Be a Game-Changer!

With Chicago Cubs’ starting second baseman Nico Hoerner not traveling with the team to Japan for their Tokyo Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers, an opportunity has opened up in the team’s starting lineup.

Bleacher Report has projected that veteran utility player Jon Berti will step in as the starting second baseman for the Cubs on Opening Day. Berti, who signed a one-year, $3 million deal in the offseason, will look to make a strong comeback in 2025 after a tough 2024 season. Injuries limited him to just 24 regular-season games with the New York Yankees last year, and Chicago will mark the fourth team in his career.

Throughout his career, Berti has posted a .259 batting average, but his performance in New York last season was notably better, finishing with a .273 average in his limited appearances. This spring, he has continued that solid play, maintaining a .273 average and an OPS just above .700.

While his defensive play has been a bit inconsistent—particularly at second base, as he’s had more experience at third—he has proven himself capable with the bat. The upcoming two-game series in Japan will be a crucial opportunity for Berti to showcase his abilities and prove to manager Craig Counsell that he can be a reliable option off the bench, especially in late-game situations.

Although Berti’s role as starting second baseman is expected to be temporary, with Hoerner’s eventual return to the position, this stint could help him secure a spot as a key pinch hitter or defensive replacement for the Cubs. His versatility and solid performance, especially in clutch moments, could make him an invaluable asset in the team’s overall lineup, even when Hoerner is back in the starting role.
