The St. Louis Cardinals’ 6-0 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers to open their series marked their fifth defeat in a row — and hopes that ace Sonny Gray would put an end to the skid were quickly dashed.
Gray looked sharp early, giving up just one run on three hits over the first four innings. But everything unraveled in the fifth, and the game — along with the Cardinals’ momentum — came crashing down. Even before the collapse, Gray admitted he didn’t feel right on the mound, offering a brutally honest postgame assessment.
“I don’t know, I don’t know,” Gray said, via John Denton of MLB.com. “It wasn’t good, I wasn’t good, we weren’t good and we’re not playing good. Just nothing good.”
It was a dejected tone from the veteran right-hander, and it echoed the current mood surrounding the Cardinals. Things are bleak. Manager Oli Marmol, who had recently quieted some critics, now appears unable to spark his team — a team spiraling with each passing game.
Gray’s candid comments seem to reveal a deeper issue: a lack of direction and inspiration. And if Marmol can’t get this group to respond soon, the season may slip away. Despite the rough outing, the Cardinals are still above .500 and within reach of a Wild Card spot, but the real concern is the team’s chemistry and mindset.
Right now, Marmol looks like a manager struggling to rally his clubhouse — unable to get his message through. The team’s body language and performance suggest morale is crumbling.
As if to drive that point home, the Cardinals dropped the second game of the series in a close 3-2 loss, extending their losing streak to six. The frustration is mounting, both on the field and among fans.
After a promising start to the season with a 34-27 record, this recent slide raises real doubts. Was their early success sustainable, or just a mirage? As the pressure builds, the Cardinals will need to find out — fast — if they’re for real, or if this season is slipping away.
