The New York Yankees have been actively improving their roster following their defeat in the Juan Soto sweepstakes, but general manager Brian Cashman still faces a gap at second base.
One option could be re-signing two-time All-Star Gleyber Torres. Earlier in the year, Torres expressed his desire to remain a Yankee for life, but Cashman has been non-committal, making a reunion seem unlikely. After posting an .800 OPS with 25 home runs and 68 RBI in 2023, Torres finished 2024 with a .709 OPS, 15 homers, and 63 RBI.
The Washington Nationals could be a viable destination for the 28-year-old slugger. Just Baseball’s Ryan Finkelstein believes Torres could be headed to Washington, noting that as one of the few starting second basemen available, along with utility players Ha-Seong Kim and Jose Iglesias, Torres should generate significant interest.
However, some teams may be hesitant to commit to him long-term, despite his age. Heading into the 2024 season, Torres’ projected value for a multi-year deal was four years and $68 million, according to The Athletic’s Tim Britton.
However, his lackluster performance in 2024 has lowered his market value, with Spotrac estimating a three-year, $20 million contract. Finkelstein expects Torres to sign a two-year, $28 million deal, with an opt-out after 2025.
