The Vikings’ approach to the quarterback position this offseason is still uncertain. While they continue to evaluate their options regarding Sam Darnold, other positions may also see financial adjustments. Edge rusher Andrew Van Ginkel and safety Josh Metellus are both under contract for 2025, but their performances last season could make them candidates for new contracts. According to Ben Goessling of the Minnesota Star Tribune, both players are strong possibilities for extensions. New deals would help prevent them from potentially leaving in free agency next spring.
Van Ginkel spent the first five years of his career with the Dolphins, where his playing time varied. After joining the open market last spring, he signed a two-year, $20MM deal with the Vikings, despite interest from the Rams and Eagles. The 29-year-old quickly became a key part of Minnesota’s defense, stepping into a prominent role following Danielle Hunter’s departure.

Alongside Jonathan Greenard, Van Ginkel posted a career-high 11.5 sacks, a forced fumble, and two pick-sixes. His impressive performance earned him a Pro Bowl nod and a second-team All-Pro selection, which could bolster his position in contract negotiations. Currently, Van Ginkel is set to carry a $12.4MM cap hit for 2025, but a new deal could help reduce that amount.
Metellus, who is scheduled to count $7.38MM against the cap in 2025, is another player potentially in line for an extension. The 27-year-old was primarily a special teams player in his first three seasons but became a full-time starter in 2023.
The Vikings’ investment in Metellus paid off, as he recorded 116 tackles and 2.5 sacks. After restructuring his contract in the summer, he continued to be a key safety contributor in 2024, reaching over 100 tackles for the second consecutive year and adding two interceptions. Metellus will be an essential part of the secondary in 2025, especially if Harrison Smith retires.
With the Vikings near the top of the projected cap space for the upcoming free agency period, they may be in a good position to make notable additions. However, their internal focus will likely be on whether to extend at least one of Van Ginkel or Metellus.
