MAJOR-BREAKING: Vikings Reach Agreement With Projected $88 Million Pro Bowler Before Offseason

The Minnesota Vikings are making strategic moves with their roster as they approach the 2025 offseason. In a bid to maintain flexibility and secure key players, the team has made an important decision regarding starting cornerback Byron Murphy, who is set to become a free agent. By adjusting the terms of Murphy’s contract, the Vikings are buying themselves more time to make crucial decisions about his future with the team.

Murphy, who is 27 years old, has been a consistent performer for the Vikings since joining them on a two-year, $17.5 million deal. With a career earning total of $28.6 million, according to Over The Cap, the cornerback is in line for a sizable raise this offseason. The Vikings, still in need of solidifying their defense, could very well be the team to offer Murphy the contract he deserves, as he heads into free agency.

ESPN’s Dan Graziano reported on February 18 that the Vikings and Murphy have reached an agreement to push back the void date on his current contract. Originally, the deal was set to void 23 days before the start of the upcoming league year, which would have left the Vikings with limited options. However, this adjustment pushes the void date to just one day before the start of the league year, giving Minnesota additional time to negotiate or decide on their next move.

This extension of the contract void date also has significant implications, as it means the Vikings will no longer have the option to franchise tag Murphy. The new void date falls past the deadline for teams to use the franchise tag, making it more critical for Minnesota to make a decision sooner rather than later on whether to keep Murphy for the long haul.

The Vikings’ proactive approach is indicative of their intent to keep their roster intact and continue building a competitive team for the future. As free agency approaches, Minnesota now has more time to assess its options and potentially secure Byron Murphy, one of their key defensive players, to a long-term deal that could keep him in the purple and gold for years to come.
