Richter, an undrafted rookie who joined the Minnesota Vikings this spring, has spent the majority of the season on the team’s practice squad. He was elevated to the active roster for game days in Weeks 3, 4, and 7. According to NFL rules, once a player is elevated three times, he must be added to the 53-man roster in order to continue being eligible for game-day activation. During his time on the field, Richter has played 13 defensive snaps, recording two tackles, and has contributed 56 special teams snaps.
Meanwhile, veteran tight end Tonyan, who signed with the Vikings as a free agent in May, has had a more tumultuous season. He was waived during the initial roster cuts but was brought back to the practice squad shortly afterward.
Tonyan was elevated to the active roster for Weeks 3 and 4 but was subsequently waived and re-signed to the practice squad after his contract was terminated on October 8. He was then added back to the active roster on October 19. Through the first four games of the season, Tonyan has played 13 offensive snaps and 33 special teams snaps.
Bo Richter
In a recent update, the Vikings have once again signed Tonyan back to their practice squad, effective at 5 p.m. (CT) on Tuesday.
The frequent movement between the active roster and the practice squad highlights Tonyan’s fluctuating role within the team, while Richter’s status on the verge of a potential promotion to the 53-man roster will be an interesting development to monitor. With both players contributing in different capacities, the Vikings continue to manage their roster and player availability as the season progresses.
