Dodgers Edge Braves 2-1 in Rain-Soaked Pitchers’ Duel at Truist Park
Friday night at Truist Park featured a classic pitchers’ battle between the Atlanta Braves and the Los Angeles Dodgers, with L.A. emerging victorious in a tight 2-1 game dampened by rain.
This matchup marked the third of 15 Braves games being broadcast live by Gray Media in 2025.
Dodgers ace Yoshinobu Yamamoto was dominant on the mound, taking a no-hitter into the sixth inning and striking out six. The right-hander now leads MLB with a sparkling 0.90 ERA.
“He’s got a full arsenal,” said Braves manager Brian Snitker. “We knew it would be a tough challenge, and it definitely was.”
The Dodgers (22-10) got on the board in the fourth when Mookie Betts scored on a Will Smith sacrifice fly. Betts followed up in the sixth with a solo homer — his fifth of the year — extending the lead to 2-0.
Atlanta (14-17) didn’t score until the seventh, when Matt Olson crushed a solo shot to cut the lead in half. That was just the Braves’ second hit of the game, as both teams combined for only six hits total.
A sold-out Truist Park was hit with a rain delay in the top of the ninth, pausing the game for 1 hour and 13 minutes. After the break, Rafael Montero tossed a perfect inning for Atlanta, but Dodgers closer Evan Phillips shut things down, striking out Austin Riley and Marcell Ozuna before getting Sean Murphy to ground out.
Holmes Bounces Back with Career Night
Grant Holmes rebounded impressively from a rough outing in Arizona, striking out a career-high nine batters over six innings. He made an immediate statement by retiring Shohei Ohtani, Mookie Betts, and Freddie Freeman to start the game, and kept dealing from there.
I kind of blacked out a bit — just got locked in and focused on hitting my spots,” Holmes said.
His final line: 6 innings, 4 hits, 2 earned runs, 2 walks, and 9 strikeouts. The 29-year-old lowered his ERA to 4.24, now second-best among Braves starters behind Spencer Schwellenbach (2.87).
“It’s tough we couldn’t give him some run support,” Snitker added. “He’s really turning into a strong option for us. We wouldn’t be in this spot without him.”
The Braves wrap up the series against the Dodgers on Sunday before hosting the Cincinnati Reds for a four-game set starting Monday. The next Braves game aired on Gray Media will be on May 23 against the San Diego Padres.
