MAJOR-BREAKING: Yankees’ New Closer Devin Williams Gets Candid About Rocky Start: “I Haven’t Felt 100% Myself”

After arriving in the Bronx as one of the Yankees’ most high-profile offseason acquisitions, Devin Williams is facing early adversity in pinstripes. The two-time All-Star, brought in to fill the shoes of departing closer Clay Holmes, hasn’t quite found his rhythm yet.

Through his first four appearances of the 2025 season, the 30-year-old right-hander has posted a rough 12.00 ERA, recording just one save and sitting with an 0-1 record. While fans may be raising eyebrows, Williams himself isn’t sugarcoating the situation.

In a recent interview with NY Daily News Yankees beat reporter Gary Phillips, Williams was upfront about his slow start. According to Phillips’ post on X (formerly Twitter), Williams admitted: “I haven’t felt like 100% myself up to this point.” Despite the struggles, he emphasized that there are no physical issues — the problems stem from a lack of execution and needing more game-time reps to settle in.

Williams also pointed out that this isn’t entirely new territory. He acknowledged that the early months of the season have historically been his toughest. Statistically, March and April have been his most challenging, with a 3.03 ERA in those months — the highest of any point in the calendar during his career.

Despite the rocky beginning, Williams remains confident that things will turn around. As the new anchor of the Yankees’ bullpen, fans are hoping the dominant version of the “Airbender” — known for his devastating changeup — shows up soon to help lock down late innings as the season heats up.
