The New York Yankees kicked off their season with a 4-2 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers, but they did so without Giancarlo Stanton, who is reportedly struggling with elbow injuries. The 35-year-old slugger has had ongoing injury issues since joining the Yankees, and FanSided’s Rucker Haringey recently predicted that the team may trade Stanton this offseason due to yet another setback.
Haringey wrote, “At some point, the Yankees front office will get fed up with Giancarlo Stanton’s inability to stay healthy for any significant period.” He continued, “Missing the start of this season with injuries to both elbows might finally push Cashman to move on.
The difficulty with trading Stanton is his massive contract, but his salary significantly drops before the start of the 2026 season, making this offseason the ideal time to part ways without needing to attach too many prospects to a trade.”
Stanton signed a 13-year, $325 million contract extension with the Miami Marlins in 2015 and was traded to the Yankees in 2017. This season, his salary is an eye-popping $32 million, and there’s no clear timeline for his return. Yankees general manager Brian Cashman has suggested it could be a lengthy absence for the slugger. However, next year, his salary drops to $19 million, potentially making him easier to move.
Since joining the Yankees, Stanton has missed numerous games due to injuries. He’s only played over 140 games once and has made just one All-Star appearance. Despite his frequent injuries, he remains a significant power threat, with 162 home runs for the Yankees and 429 career home runs, making him the active leader.
However, his days of playing the outfield are over, and he’s now strictly a designated hitter. Stanton’s career achievements include an MVP Award, two Silver Sluggers, and five All-Star selections. While he’s hit 117 home runs in the last four seasons, the Yankees can no longer count on him to stay healthy for extended periods.
