The New York Yankees have already experimented with several lineup combinations early in the 2025 MLB season, and Thursday’s game against the Arizona Diamondbacks will feature another new batting order.
Ben Rice will lead off for the Yankees, taking over at first base while veteran Paul Goldschmidt gets a rest. Rice, who has primarily been the designated hitter, will make his debut at first base and bat leadoff for the first time in his career. When asked about the decision to place Rice at the top of the order, manager Aaron Boone gave a simple yet telling response: “Rakes.”

Sometimes, a brief explanation is all it takes to justify a manager’s move.
In his first five games of the season, the 26-year-old Rice has been on fire, slashing .385/.429/.923 with two home runs, two RBIs, and five strikeouts in 13 at-bats. His strong start has given Boone hope that Rice can ignite the offense from the leadoff spot.
After sweeping the Milwaukee Brewers in their season-opening series, the Yankees have dropped their last two games to the Diamondbacks. They will look to rebound and secure a win in Thursday’s series finale.
