The New York Yankees are in a prime position to contend for a World Series title, and one proposed trade could land them a superstar shortstop from a division rival.
Although the Yankees have Anthony Volpe at shortstop, Nick Prasad from Last Word on Sports suggests they should consider trading him as part of a package for Bo Bichette of the Toronto Blue Jays.
The proposed deal would see the Yankees acquire Bichette, while the Blue Jays would get Volpe, Oswaldo Cabrera, and an unnamed prospect (not one of New York’s top prospects).
Bichette, a two-time All-Star and former AL hits leader, could be a huge addition to the Yankees’ lineup, potentially serving as a leadoff hitter ahead of Aaron Judge.
The trade would allow the Blue Jays to part ways with their star shortstop, who is entering the final year of his contract, in exchange for two MLB-ready players and a prospect to help reset their roster with a younger core.
Prasad believes Bichette would be a good fit for the Yankees, especially with the Blue Jays reportedly open to trading the shortstop. “It’s clear to many in the AL East that Bichette has been ‘checked out’ in Toronto,” Prasad said.
He struggled with injuries in 2024, limiting his playing time to just 333 at-bats, but when healthy, he’s been a consistent power hitter with a .300-plus batting average. A change of scenery in New York could reignite his success.”
Bichette’s 2024 season was marred by injuries, and he played just 81 games. He’s also in the final year of club control in 2025, making him an intriguing target for teams looking to make a splash.
Yankees general manager Brian Cashman has made it clear that his goal is to build the best team possible. Despite missing out on Juan Soto in free agency, Cashman has bolstered the roster with key additions like Max Fried, Cody Bellinger, Paul Goldschmidt, and Devin Williams.
“My job is to ensure we’re as competitive as possible every year,” Cashman said. “We’ll explore every opportunity. Bichette has been a thorn in our side for years, and while he’s now a free agent, we’ve certainly been in discussions about him.”
With the Yankees having the second-best odds to win the World Series, it’s clear Cashman is focused on making bold moves to keep them in contention.
