The Atlanta Braves are staying active with roster moves as they work to climb out of the hole they’ve dug for themselves. While today’s transaction likely won’t be the one that turns their season around, it shows they’re trying to make changes.
The Braves have acquired catcher Jason Delay from the Pirates in exchange for cash considerations. Delay, who only had 19 plate appearances in 2024, saw a significant drop in playing time from the previous season, when he appeared in 70 games and logged 187 plate appearances. In 2023, he hit .251/.319/.346 with a .296 wOBA and 81 wRC+.
Despite his offensive struggles, he posted a 1.1 fWAR, largely due to his strong pitch framing and ability to steal strikes behind the plate.
Even with his major league experience, Delay will be heading to Double-A to play for the Columbus Clingstones. He’ll remain on the Braves’ 40-man roster after the team placed Reynaldo López on the 60-day IL.
López, who is set to undergo surgery for an inflamed left shoulder, will be out for at least two months, and it’s likely he won’t return until after the All-Star break. Additionally, veteran reliever Jesse Chavez has been outrighted and elected free agency, marking the end of his brief stint with the Braves.
While these moves aren’t groundbreaking, they do help clarify the Braves’ roster situation. They’ve added depth with a new catcher, shifted one of their top pitchers to the 60-day IL, and parted ways with Chavez, leaving the team with a clearer roster heading into the next phase of the season.
