MAJOR-NEWS: Braves’ Shocking Pursuit of Rafael Devers May Signal End of Atlanta slugger’s Era

The baseball world was rocked earlier this month when the Red Sox unexpectedly traded power-hitter Rafael Devers to the Giants, capping off a tumultuous breakup. While opinions vary on who “won” the deal—Boston or San Francisco—it’s sparked a lot of curiosity among Braves fans: which other teams were seriously chasing Devers?

Atlanta reportedly surfaced in discussions, but initial chatter suggested a brief glimmer before fading. However, Bob Nightengale of USA Today writes that the Braves were more deeply involved than first thought, alongside the Mariners, Cubs, Padres, and Blue Jays—hinting that Atlanta might have seriously considered swinging for Devers .

That possibility raises major questions about Atlanta’s long-term roster structure. Taking on Devers—expected to play first base/DH and earning nearly $30 million annually—would represent a sharp departure from GM Alex Anthopoulos’s typical approach. Especially since the Braves already have Austin Riley and Matt Olson locked in at third and first base, both of whom rate as high (or higher) than Devers.

Sure, sliding Devers into the outfield seems unlikely—after all, he struggled with positional changes earlier this season. That leaves DH, currently the domain of Marcell Ozuna. Rumors (unsubstantiated but circulating) suggested a package involving Ozuna, Sean Murphy, and some pitching prospects going to Boston to help balance the deal.

Even if that specific trade never materialized, the Braves’ interest in Devers seems to signal a mindset shift: they’re preparing for a post-Ozuna era. Despite solid production this year, Ozuna’s declining power and age—plus a nagging hip issue—suggest his best days may be behind him. Don’t be surprised if Atlanta moves him before the 2025 season ends or swings a deal at the trade deadline.
