MAJOR-NEWS: “From DFA to Trade Domino: How Arcia’s Rockies Move Just Handed The Braves a Golden Game-Changing Trade Opportunity

Orlando Arcia Finds New Opportunity — and It Might Come Back to Help the Braves

Orlando Arcia has reportedly found a fresh start in Major League Baseball, just days after the Atlanta Braves designated him for assignment. According to Daniel Álvarez-Montes, Arcia is nearing a deal with the Colorado Rockies — a move that could unexpectedly work in Atlanta’s favor.

The Braves cut ties with Arcia to make room on the roster for the returning Ronald Acuña Jr. With Arcia already having lost his starting shortstop role, the decision wasn’t shocking — though fans still have a soft spot for the 2023 All-Star.

For Colorado, signing Arcia is a low-risk gamble. He’s struggled this season, but his All-Star nod was just last year, and he offers versatility, having logged time at second base and in the outfield. The Rockies may simply be buying low — or preparing for something bigger.

Could This Open the Door for a Braves Dream Trade?

Enter Ezequiel Tovar.

The Rockies’ 23-year-old shortstop is coming off a Gold Glove season and is improving at the plate in 2024. Last year, he posted a solid .269/.469/.736 slash line with an OPS+ of 102 — and he’s trending upward this season.

Tovar’s talent is undeniable, but the Rockies are far from contending. With a major rebuild ahead, it might make sense for them to cash in on one of their most valuable assets while his stock is high.

Braves fans have long dreamed of Tovar landing in Atlanta, but there are roadblocks. The Braves already acquired Nick Allen from the A’s last year, and he recently took over the shortstop job from Arcia. While Allen has been serviceable, he’s far from a sure thing, slashing .250/.316/.279 with an OPS+ of 69.

So where does Arcia fit in all this?

If Colorado is considering moving Tovar, bringing in Arcia could be part of that plan — either to provide insurance or to hold down the spot temporarily. And if the Rockies do make Tovar available, Atlanta will likely be one of several teams interested. The challenge? The Braves may not have the prospect depth to compete with other suitors.

Still, Arcia landing in Colorado might just be the first domino in a much larger shift — one that could ultimately benefit the Braves, if the stars align.
