Once considered a top-three pick, Shedeur Sanders’s dramatic fall in last weekend’s NFL Draft quickly became one of the biggest offseason storylines. For months, Sanders had been linked to the New York Giants, who were rumored to be eyeing the Colorado quarterback with the No. 3 overall pick.
But those plans apparently unraveled after a pre-draft meeting between Sanders and the Giants went poorly.
Report: Sanders Left “Pissed” After Awkward Meeting With Giants
According to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer, things took a turn during a pre-draft visit with Giants head coach Brian Daboll. Breer explained on 98.5 The Sports Hub that the Giants have a tradition of testing prospects by giving them a play install with intentional errors to see how well they pick up on them.
“Shedeur didn’t catch the mistakes and got called out,” Breer said. “He was pissed that they did that to him.”
Breer reported that Sanders left the meeting visibly frustrated after the exchange with Daboll. This account aligns with what The Ringer’s Todd McShay mentioned on his podcast, The McShay Show:
“Shedeur’s private interview with Brian Daboll didn’t go well. He was given an install packet, didn’t prepare properly, and got called out for it. He didn’t take it well — and Daboll didn’t appreciate that.”
With both reports echoing the same issue, it’s clear the failed interview played a major role in the Giants ultimately passing on Sanders — opting instead for Ole Miss QB Jaxson Dart.

From First-Round Hype to Day 3 Shock: Sanders Slides to Cleveland
What followed was one of the biggest surprises of the draft. Sanders fell all the way to the fifth round, where the Cleveland Browns finally scooped him up. The unexpected drop dominated headlines and led to widespread speculation about what went wrong.
Now, with more details emerging about the Giants’ meeting, it’s becoming easier to understand why some teams backed away.
A Fresh Start in Cleveland?
Despite the setback, Sanders still has a real shot at carving out a role with the Browns. The team’s quarterback room is wide open, with veterans Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett, as well as third-round pick Dillon Gabriel, all competing for snaps. If Sanders can impress during training camp, he could very well play his way into the rotation.
Meanwhile, the Giants’ new quarterback, Jaxson Dart, will likely spend his rookie year learning behind veterans Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston. After a strong final college season at Ole Miss (29 touchdowns to just 6 interceptions), Dart enters New York with considerable buzz surrounding his potential.
