The Minnesota Vikings are currently weighing their options at quarterback, deciding whether to stick with Sam Darnold or hand the reins to former #10 overall pick J.J. McCarthy. However, a new possibility has emerged in recent weeks: the Vikings might seek an external quarterback to replace Darnold as the starter while potentially keeping McCarthy, who has yet to play a regular season game in the NFL.
One intriguing option that has surfaced is Matthew Stafford, the veteran quarterback who could be on the move from the Los Angeles Rams, where he won Super Bowl LVI. Stafford, with his extensive NFC North experience, could offer the Vikings one or two solid years of play while McCarthy develops into a potential starting QB. Stafford still has two years remaining on his four-year, $160 million contract, making him a viable short-term option for Minnesota.

However, a tough prediction has been made by NFL insider Mike Florio, who reports that an experienced NFL general manager believes the Vikings will miss out on Stafford, with the New York Giants emerging as the likely destination for the two-time Pro Bowler.
According to the report, Stafford could push for a raise from the Rams, and if the two sides can’t reach an agreement, the Giants, who are under pressure to make a big move for a quarterback, may be willing to trade for him. The Giants are reportedly prepared to offer more in a trade than the Vikings, particularly given their dire need at quarterback and the lack of other viable options on their roster.
While the Giants’ front office, led by GM Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll, faces pressure heading into 2025, they could make a bold move for Stafford to improve their chances of winning now. For the Vikings, however, spending significant resources on a quarterback, especially with their lack of high draft picks in the 2025 draft, may feel like a risky move. The Vikings’ current situation might make it more logical to stick with Darnold rather than pursuing a high-priced quarterback like Stafford, especially considering their limited assets to trade.
