MAJOR-NEWS: Original Six Rival Hijacks Bruins’ Top Coaching Target in Lightning-Fast Move

A compelling head coaching option briefly emerged for the Bruins on Monday — but he was quickly snatched up.

The New York Rangers announced Friday that they’ve hired Mike Sullivan as the 38th head coach in team history, just four days after his departure from the Pittsburgh Penguins ended a decade-long run. He replaces Peter Laviolette behind the bench in New York.

Sullivan was widely believed to be on Boston’s radar. The Marshfield, Massachusetts native has deep ties to the organization: he began his NHL head coaching career with the Bruins in 2003, played college hockey at Boston University, and is also the father-in-law of Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy, who is rumored to be a top contender for the team’s captaincy.

Instead, Boston will have to watch from a distance as Sullivan attempts to steer the Rangers back to prominence. Both storied franchises, however, could receive a much-needed boost of hope on Monday night when the results of the 2025 NHL Draft Lottery are revealed.
