Nick Castellanos launched a grand slam, Zack Wheeler delivered six solid innings, and the Philadelphia Phillies completed a three-game sweep of the Toronto Blue Jays with an 11-4 win on Sunday.
Alec Bohm also homered, while Otto Kemp contributed four hits and two RBIs, helping the Phillies secure their fifth win in six games.
For Toronto, Ernie Clement had three hits, and rookie Will Robertson drove in one of the team’s three runs in his major league debut.
Wheeler (7-2) was dominant on the mound, allowing just one earned run on four hits, striking out nine batters and walking none. The Phillies’ ace struck out the side in both the second and third innings.
Philadelphia got off to a fast start as Trea Turner doubled on the very first pitch of the game and later scored on Kyle Schwarber’s single off Toronto’s José Berríos (2-3). The Phillies pounded Berríos for six runs on nine hits over 4⅔ innings, snapping his streak of allowing just one earned run over his previous 18⅔ innings.
Castellanos put the game out of reach with a towering grand slam off an 85-mph slider in the sixth inning, his seventh home run of the season, extending Philadelphia’s lead to 10-2.
A highlight for Toronto came when left fielder Alan Roden made a spectacular diving catch against the left-field wall, apparently leaving a mark from his eye black. Despite the impact, Roden stayed in the game after briefly lying on the ground.
Since his call-up on June 7 to replace the injured Bryce Harper, Kemp has been impressive, hitting .345 over eight games.
Looking ahead, the Blue Jays kick off a six-game home stand Tuesday against the Arizona Diamondbacks, with right-hander Chris Bassitt (7-3, 3.70 ERA) facing off against Brandon Pfaadt (8-4, 5.50 ERA).
The Phillies head to Miami Monday to start a four-game series, where rookie Mick Abel (1-0, 2.35 ERA) will take on right-hander Sandy Alcantara (3-7, 7.14 ERA).
