MAJOR-NEWS: Safety Shakeup Looms: Vikings’ $12 Million Move Sparks Major Changes Ahead of Free Agency

The quiet period before an eventful offseason for the Minnesota Vikings has come to an end. With around 24 players set to become free agents, the team will be making significant roster changes, which could mean parting ways with some of their star players.

On Thursday, March 6, the Vikings made their first big move ahead of free agency, extending safety Theo Jackson with a two-year, $12.6 million deal — signaling he’ll likely have a bigger role next season, as reported by Minnesota Star Tribune beat writer Ben Goessling. This move could lead to changes in the safety lineup, as the futures of stars Harrison Smith and Cam Bynum are uncertain.

Bynum, whose rookie contract ends next week, is poised to become one of the top players in the safety market, likely commanding a substantial contract as he enters his prime at 26. Meanwhile, 36-year-old Smith, nearing the end of his career, is contemplating retirement.

While both veterans could return at the right price, Jackson’s extension likely rules out the possibility of the Vikings pursuing a high-profile external free agent like Jevon Holland. After the Vikings’ season-ending loss to the Los Angeles Rams, Smith mentioned he would consider his future and potential retirement during the offseason, a decision that could provide the team with leverage in contract negotiations with Bynum.

The Vikings also have Josh Metellus, a versatile defensive player, who is up for a contract adjustment after a similar extension to Jackson’s two years ago. Metellus, once primarily a special teams player, has thrived under defensive coordinator Brian Flores. Jackson, who has learned from Metellus, may step into Bynum’s role as a deep safety or play closer to the line of scrimmage.

The Vikings’ safety group, known as the “Four Horsemen” in the coach’s room, has been a strong and dependable unit for years. However, with the current uncertainty surrounding the position, the pressure may be on Bynum to either accept the Vikings’ offer or test the waters in free agency.

Pro Football Focus (PFF) estimates Bynum could land a three-year, $42.8 million deal, averaging $14.3 million per year. The Vikings also face a similar decision with Pro Bowl cornerback Byron Murphy Jr., which could further influence Bynum’s contract discussions.
