Russell Wilson may be new to the New York Giants, but his veteran status — and Super Bowl-winning résumé — logically places him atop the depth chart ahead of rookie Jaxson Dart, backup Jameis Winston, and local fan-favorite Tommy DeVito.
Seems reasonable, right?
Not according to three-time Super Bowl champion and current NFL analyst Mark Schlereth. The former Broncos lineman, now with FS1, didn’t hold back during a recent appearance on Breakfast Ball, where he dropped a bold take:
“The Giants should cut Russell Wilson and start Jaxson Dart.”
Yes, Schlereth is dead serious.
His reasoning? He’s drawing comparisons to what happened in Denver. The Broncos moved on from Wilson after two disappointing seasons, then drafted Bo Nix at No. 12 in 2024 — and now, Nix has already led the team to a playoff appearance and looks like a future star.
“You start your rookie, go through the growing pains, and accept you’re not a playoff team right now,” Schlereth said. “Just rip off the Band-Aid and hand it to Dart.”
But here’s the problem: that take doesn’t really hold up — financially or strategically.
Russell Wilson
Wilson’s salary for the year is just $11 million, and cutting him would stick the Giants with $10 million in dead money. That’s a huge penalty for a short leash. And while Dart may be the future, the Giants still know very little about what he actually is as an NFL quarterback.
As for Schlereth’s perspective? Let’s be honest — his view of Wilson is shaped by two ugly years in Denver. He played for the Broncos. He won two rings there. He broadcasts from there. His vision of Wilson is still tinted Bronco orange.
So should Jaxson Dart start someday? Maybe. Probably. But now? Not yet. The Giants brought in Wilson for a reason — and like it or not, for the moment, he’s still QB1.
