After being waived by the San Francisco 49ers and failing a physical with the Indianapolis Colts, Ambry Thomas has landed with a new team. The former third-round pick, who spent the entire 2024 season on injured reserve, has joined the Minnesota Vikings’ practice squad, according to Adam Schefter.
Thomas was released from injured reserve by the 49ers on December 17, and the Colts quickly claimed him off waivers. However, due to a forearm injury, he failed Indianapolis’ physical, and they declined to sign him. His agreement with the Vikings finally puts the situation behind him.
Although it appears Thomas has passed the Vikings’ physical, it’s still unclear how his injury will impact his performance moving forward. The fourth-year cornerback has not played since Super Bowl LVIII.

Since being drafted out of Michigan, Thomas has struggled to make a significant impact in the NFL. He showed promise in 2023 with 43 tackles and seven pass breakups in just 481 defensive snaps, but recurring injuries led to his release by the 49ers with less than a month left in the 2024 season.
In addition to his defensive role, Thomas was expected to contribute on special teams, especially as a kick returner, a role he excelled in during college. However, injury setbacks have kept him from showcasing this skill in the NFL. He has only returned four kickoffs—during his rookie season in 2021—and has yet to field a punt.
