The New York Yankees are off to a decent — though not dominant — 8-7 start, which is currently enough to keep them atop the American League East following a loss to the San Francisco Giants on Sunday. What makes that early success more impressive is that they’ve done it without their veteran designated hitter, Giancarlo Stanton.
Now in year 11 of his massive 13-year, $325 million deal, the 35-year-old slugger — who has crushed 429 career home runs (plus 18 more in the postseason) — has been a key part of the Yankees’ offensive core since arriving from the Marlins in a blockbuster trade after the 2017 season.

However, Stanton hasn’t seen a single pitch this season. He missed all of spring training and has been sidelined for the first 15 games of the regular season due to lingering and somewhat mysterious elbow issues affecting both arms.
On Sunday, manager Aaron Boone shared an update that did little to clear things up. According to MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch, Stanton is currently in New York and taking swings against the Trajekt high-velocity pitching machine — a cutting-edge tool that simulates real MLB pitchers.
But the more confusing part came when Boone said Stanton is also “starting to move around more outside,” leaving fans and media unsure exactly what that means for his return timeline.
