The New York Yankees’ starting rotation has stumbled out of the gate this season, with the group posting a collective ERA north of 4.00. As summer draws closer, the Yankees are expected to seek reinforcements for their pitching staff.
Following the recent trade of Nestor Cortes to the Milwaukee Brewers in exchange for closer Devin Williams, New York is now reportedly eyeing another Brewers pitcher: Freddy Peralta. A 2021 All-Star, Peralta posted a stellar 2.81 ERA that year and has remained consistent since, never recording a season ERA above 4.00. He’s off to a hot start again this year, entering Tuesday with a 2.43 ERA over six outings.
While the Yankees are battling rotation injuries, the Brewers find themselves stuck in the middle of a lackluster National League Central. If Milwaukee’s performance doesn’t improve soon, they may be inclined to deal one of their top arms for future assets.
New York’s need is pressing — Gerrit Cole is expected to miss the entire season, Luis Gil is sidelined until at least June, and Marcus Stroman remains on the IL until sometime in May. Adding Peralta would give the Yankees a much-needed boost as they try to stay competitive over the long haul.
According to Kristie Ackert of Athlon Sports, one name being floated as possible trade compensation is Spencer Jones, the Yankees’ 2022 first-round pick. Once hyped as the next Aaron Judge, Jones has struggled in the minors, racking up 200 strikeouts last season. Still, his raw tools and upside could appeal to the Brewers, who might be looking to build for the future.
Peralta’s contract includes a club option for next season, making him an attractive target for contenders. If the Brewers decide to move him, they could command a strong return — possibly including prospects like Jones — as they position themselves for a longer-term rebuild.
