The Boston Bruins kicked off their five-game West Coast road trip Thursday night with a disappointing 5-1 defeat to the Vegas Golden Knights, coached by their former bench boss Bruce Cassidy. With the Bruins trailing 5-0 late in the game, Morgan Geekie scored to prevent the shutout, giving the Black and Gold a small consolation.
As Boston slips further down the Eastern Conference standings, their playoff hopes are fading. By the time they return home next month, they could find themselves in a position where securing a high lottery pick in the upcoming NHL Entry Draft becomes a priority.
The Bruins’ next challenge comes Saturday night in Northern California, where they face the San Jose Sharks, a game they should theoretically win. But given the unpredictable nature of the 2024-25 Bruins, nothing is guaranteed.
This is the second of two matchups between these teams this season, with the Bruins hoping to complete a season sweep after a 6-3 victory in January. That game saw the Bruins come from behind, trailing 3-2 entering the third period before Charlie Coyle’s two goals and an assist helped lead the charge with four unanswered goals.
However, the Bruins will be without Coyle this time around, as he was traded to the Colorado Avalanche at the deadline. Additionally, key players like Brad Marchand and Brandon Carlo are also absent from the lineup.
For East Coast Bruins fans, this game will have a late start at 10:30 PM. It can be watched on NESN, NBCSCA, or ESPN+.
