The Minnesota Vikings still face uncertainty when it comes to adding a third quarterback to their roster. Currently, only J.J. McCarthy and Brett Rypien are listed at the position following Sam Darnold’s move to the Seattle Seahawks. While there was speculation about Aaron Rodgers, the Vikings remain focused on moving forward with McCarthy as the starter. Joe Flacco, another potential target, signed with the Browns, limiting Minnesota’s free-agent options.
During an appearance on KFAN with Dan Barreiro, Ben Goessling, Vikings beat reporter for the Star Tribune, shared some insight. He pointed to April 28 as a date to watch, explaining that after 3:01 p.m. that day, teams can sign free agents without affecting next year’s compensatory draft picks. Goessling noted that the Vikings expect to receive two or three compensatory picks, depending on the role Trent Sherfield plays in Denver.
With Flacco and Drew Lock off the board, Carson Wentz and Ryan Tannehill are two of the top remaining free-agent quarterbacks. Wentz, who made the Pro Bowl in 2017 and backed up Patrick Mahomes last season, has ties to the Vikings’ staff. Josh McCown, now on Minnesota’s coaching staff, previously worked with Wentz in Philadelphia, giving the team valuable insight into his personality and play style.
As for Tannehill, he hasn’t played since 2022 but shares an agent with McCarthy, which could make a deal smoother. However, questions remain about his desire to return to football and whether he’d be open to living in Minnesota.
Barreiro and Goessling also brought up an unexpected possibility—Kirk Cousins returning to the Vikings as a backup. Goessling said that if Cousins finds no starting opportunities, a return to Minnesota could appeal to him due to his familiarity with the offense, the area, and even small personal comforts like his old neighborhood. But the locker room dynamics of such a move would be worth considering.
Cousins, who spent six seasons in Minnesota and made three Pro Bowls, was benched by the Falcons late last season in favor of rookie Michael Penix Jr.
Ultimately, Vikings fans will likely need to wait until after the NFL Draft to see what direction the team takes in filling out their quarterback room.
