The New York Giants face a pivotal decision in early May regarding former first-round pick, edge rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux. As he enters the fourth year of his $31 million rookie contract, the Giants must decide whether to pick up his fifth-year option—or explore other options entirely.
According to Pro Football Focus analyst Bradley Locker, the Giants find themselves in a unique position roster-wise, with a mix of untouchable young stars and players with less trade appeal. Thibodeaux might be an exception, despite his promising performance last season.
The analyst notes that while Thibodeaux posted a solid 72.0 PFF pass-rushing grade, he played just 593 snaps. Locker suggests that while reports indicate the Giants will likely exercise his fifth-year option, there’s still a possibility of a trade if a player like Penn State’s Abdul Carter falls to the Giants at No. 3 in the draft.

If Carter, regarded by some as the most talented prospect in this year’s draft, is available, the Giants could seriously consider selecting him. This could lead to a trade of Thibodeaux to gain more draft capital, especially if they can secure future picks for 2025 or 2026.
This decision would likely need to be made before Thibodeaux’s fifth-year option is exercised, which would allow his new team to decide whether to keep him at a hefty $14.75 million cap hit in 2026.
The Giants are also heavily invested in their edge rusher position, with Brian Burns carrying a massive $29.75 million cap hit in 2025. Adding another large rookie contract to the mix could lead to a logjam, particularly with other versatile players like Chauncey Golston and Victor Dimukeje joining the fold. If the Giants prioritize flexibility and cap space, trading Thibodeaux to clear room for Carter might become their most viable option.
