MAJOR-UPDATE; Major Defensive Boost: Kansas State Makes Bold Move To Land Alabama’s Promising Defensive Dynamo

After a standout freshman season at South Alabama, Amarion Fortenberry has decided to transfer, officially signing with the Kansas State Wildcats, according to a report by On3’s Pete Nakos on Saturday.

South Alabama wrapped up the 2024 season with a 7-6 record, capped by a victory over Western Michigan in the Salute to Veterans Bowl. This was the first year under head coach Major Applewhite, who took over after Kane Wommack left for Alabama. Applewhite had previously been the offensive coordinator at South Alabama and served as an analyst for Alabama before returning as head coach.

Fortenberry made an immediate impact in his freshman campaign, posting 45 tackles, two tackles for loss, two interceptions, and one forced fumble. He appeared in every game for the Jaguars and quickly became one of the team’s standout players.

Fortenberry is one of several key players to leave South Alabama’s secondary via the transfer portal, joining safety Rickey Hyatt, cornerbacks Brian Dillard and Jordan Scruggs in seeking new opportunities.

Kansas State, in an effort to strengthen its roster, has been active in the portal, bringing in nine new players, including former Ohio State linebacker Gabe Powers, former Oklahoma corner Jayden Rowe, former USC offensive lineman Amos Talalele, and former Nebraska running back Gabe Ervin Jr. The Wildcats have also bolstered their secondary with the additions of former Arizona safety Gunnar Maldonado and West Georgia safety Mar’Quavious Moss.
