A Minneapolis-based attorney is currently under investigation for allegedly smuggling illegal drugs to inmates at the Hennepin County Jail,

as revealed in recently filed court documents. According to a search warrant affidavit submitted Monday in District Court, Sarah Rafat Gad, 37, is accused of exploiting her privileges as a defense attorney to bypass security measures and deliver papers laced with cocaine and fentanyl to two of her clients. These clients are reportedly members of “The Lows,” a well-known street gang. Typically, the only form of correspondence that inmates can receive without being screened for contraband is legal mail delivered directly by their attorneys, a loophole Gad is suspected of exploiting.
As of now, Gad has not been arrested or formally charged in connection with the investigation, according to officials from the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office and County Attorney’s Office, who addressed the matter on Tuesday. When contacted by the *Minnesota Star Tribune* for comment, Gad vehemently denied the allegations, stating, “I would never engage in such conduct. I am at a loss for words.”
The Hennepin County Jail has strict protocols in place to limit in-person visits to inmates, allowing access only to their legal counsel and law enforcement officials. These individuals are granted unrestricted access to meet with inmates at any time, a policy intended to facilitate legal representation but which may have been misused in this case. The investigation raises serious concerns about the potential abuse of attorney-client privileges and the security measures within the jail system. Authorities are continuing to gather evidence, and further developments in the case are expected as the probe unfolds.
