According to Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Anthony Santander, he believes he was the Detroit Tigers’ “Plan B” during this past offseason’s free agency, but the team never extended him an offer.
**Anthony Santander Opens Up**
Santander revealed to the Free Press on Monday afternoon, “They looked at me, but their priority was a third baseman because that was their biggest need. I was next. They showed interest, calling to check if I was still available, but I was second in line.”
He added, “The only thing I know is they were really interested in me, but only after the third baseman.”
**Detroit Tigers’ All-or-Nothing Approach**
The Tigers’ clear Plan A was to sign star third baseman Alex Bregman to a multi-year deal. However, Bregman turned down their offer and instead signed a shorter contract with the Boston Red Sox.
Santander signed with the Blue Jays on January 20, while Bregman waited until February 15 to finalize his decision.
**What Could Have Been?**
Had Bregman signed earlier, would Santander have ended up in Detroit?
“The Tigers were in the playoffs last season,” Santander said. “My top priority was joining a team with a chance to compete for the postseason. I chose Toronto because they have that goal. Maybe things could’ve been different, but they didn’t make an offer, so it’s hard to say.”
**The Bottom Line**
If Santander replicates his impressive 2024 season—where he slashed .235/.308/.506 with 44 home runs and 102 RBIs—the Tigers may regret putting all their focus on Bregman and missing out on a potential game-changer.
