NEWS-FLASH: Surprise Target: Giants Eye Powerful RB Reinforcements in 2025 Draft To Shake Up Their Backfield

Pre-draft visits don’t always signal strong interest in a player, but they can offer insight into how teams are gathering intel ahead of the draft. For the New York Giants, one clear trend has emerged — they’re taking a close look at the bigger running backs in the 2025 NFL Draft class. That trend continued on Wednesday when Iowa running back Kaleb Johnson made an official 30 visit, sharing a snapshot from the Giants’ facility on his Instagram story.

Johnson had a standout senior season in 2024, thriving in Iowa’s run-heavy scheme. He led the Big Ten with 1,537 rushing yards and 21 touchdowns, earning All-American recognition. His production alone makes him draft-worthy, but there’s also a coaching connection worth noting — Johnson was coached throughout college by Ladell Betts, a former NFL running back who was recently hired by the Giants as their new RBs coach after Joel Thomas returned to the Saints to join Kellen Moore’s staff.

While Johnson isn’t known for blazing speed — he clocked a 4.58-second 40-yard dash — he brings a punishing running style, strong balance through contact, and refined technique that make him effective between the tackles and capable of occasional big plays. He’s viewed as a potential Day 2 pick, although the depth of this year’s running back class could affect his stock.

Johnson isn’t the only back on New York’s radar. Earlier in the week, the team also hosted pre-draft visits with Ohio State’s Quinshon Judkins and Oklahoma State’s Ollie Gordon II. At their local pro day, Rutgers back Kyle Monangai showcased his skills as well. Each of these backs fits the mold of a physical runner who could complement current Giants RB Tyrone Tracy Jr. — a strong rookie performer who lacks size and blocking prowess.

Adding a short-yardage power back who can also contribute in the passing game — without using premium draft capital — would be a smart move for the Giants. While it might not be a top priority, selecting a running back late in Day 2 or early on Day 3 is definitely in play.
