The decision on Aaron Rodgers’ free agency ultimately hinges on where the legendary quarterback wants to play what could be the final season of his Hall of Fame career, with the Minnesota Vikings being the key factor in his decision.
Rodgers is a top target for both the New York Giants and Pittsburgh Steelers, but he won’t make a decision until the Vikings determine whether bringing him in to mentor second-year QB J.J. McCarthy is the right move. At 42 years old, Rodgers is coming off a lackluster two years with the New York Jets, a team that thought they were a quarterback away from a Super Bowl before acquiring Rodgers for the 2023 season.
“The Vikings are currently discussing their quarterback situation and whether or not they want Rodgers,” reported Dianna Russini of The Athletic on March 14. “Rodgers is waiting for their decision and hasn’t received an answer yet. Everyone’s waiting.”
Vikings’ Decision on Rodgers Will Depend on McCarthy’s Development and Super Bowl Hopes for 2025
The Vikings’ choice will come down to whether they want to delay McCarthy’s rise to starting QB for another year or take a chance on Rodgers, believing he could lead their Super Bowl-ready roster to glory in 2025.

Aaron Rodgers
There’s still a potential twist here. The Vikings have internally discussed what it would look like to add Rodgers to their quarterback room,” said Kevin Seifert of ESPN on SportsCenter Wednesday. “You have a 14-win team, the reigning Coach of the Year in Kevin O’Connell, All-Pro receiver Justin Jefferson, upgraded lines, and a solid defense with Brian Flores. Add Rodgers to that mix, and they could be a Super Bowl favorite in 2025.”
The Rodgers Decision: High-Risk, High-Reward for the Vikings?
Unlike his Jets stint, the Vikings wouldn’t need to trade assets or commit to a long-term deal with Rodgers. They could pivot to McCarthy if Rodgers doesn’t live up to expectations.
Despite some analysts urging the Vikings not to pursue Rodgers due to the off-field distractions he brings, the team may still be willing to take that risk for a potential championship run if they believe it’s within reach for 2025.
